Why Social Media Is Making Wedding Planning More Stressful Than It Needs To Be

One of my brides recently shared something with me that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.

She said,

“I had to step away from social media because being engaged started feeling like homework.”

And honestly?

I understood exactly what she meant.

After years of working with brides, I’ve noticed something changing. While engagement season used to feel exciting, many brides now tell me they feel overwhelmed before they’ve even started planning.

Somewhere along the way, weddings stopped being simple celebrations and started feeling like productions.

Every time you open Instagram or TikTok, there seems to be another list waiting for you:

  • Things every bride should do 12 months before the wedding.

  • Wedding trends you can’t miss.

  • Beauty treatments you should already be booking.

  • Details guests will supposedly remember forever.

  • Things brides regret not doing.

As a result, what should be one of the happiest seasons of your life can quickly start feeling like a race.

The Pressure No One Talks About

As a hair and makeup artist, I’ve had the privilege of spending wedding mornings with hundreds of brides.

I’ve witnessed the nerves, the excitement, the happy tears, and those quiet moments shared between mothers, sisters, and lifelong friends.

Because of those experiences, I can tell you something with complete honesty:

Not one bride has ever told me,

“I wish I had spent more time on TikTok.”

However, I have heard:

  • “I wish I stressed less.”

  • “I wish I had enjoyed being engaged more.”

  • “I wish I had stopped comparing myself to other brides.”

Unfortunately, comparison has a way of making even beautiful things feel heavy.

Your Wedding Is Not a Test

Somehow, social media has convinced many brides that there is a “right” way to be engaged.

In reality, there isn’t.

Not every trend deserves your attention.

Viral products are optional.

Bridal events can be wonderful, but they are not requirements.

And no checklist can determine whether you’re doing engagement “correctly.”

Most importantly, you are not behind.

Your wedding doesn’t need to look like someone else’s to be meaningful.

Ultimately, the most memorable weddings are not the ones that follow every trend—they’re the ones that feel personal.

What Brides Actually Tell Me Matters

After years in this industry, I’ve learned that most brides want the same things.

They want:

  • A peaceful wedding morning.

  • Beautiful memories.

  • Meaningful photographs.

  • To feel comfortable and confident.

  • To enjoy the day with the people they love.

Interestingly, very few brides talk about the things social media seems to obsess over.

Because when the wedding day finally arrives, people rarely remember perfection.

Instead, they remember how the day felt.

They remember laughing with their bridesmaids.

They remember seeing their partner at the end of the aisle.

And they remember feeling loved.

My Advice as a Wedding Beauty Professional

Use social media for inspiration—not validation.

For example, if Pinterest brings you joy, enjoy it.

If TikTok inspires you, that’s wonderful.

However, if social media is making you anxious, overwhelmed, or constantly questioning your decisions, give yourself permission to step away.

Not every moment needs to be shared online.

Comparison only steals joy from your own experience.

And there is certainly no award for being the “perfect bride.”

Because the truth is, there is no perfect bride.

There is only your version of beautiful.

And that is more than enough.

A Reminder From Freiya Beauty

Your engagement season should feel joyful, intentional, and peaceful.
